Seventeen businesses will serve as the inaugural participants in a landmark business coaching initiative designed to boost WA’s Aboriginal tourism experiences.
The $4.6 million Aboriginal Tourism Development Program (ATDP) is funded by Royalties for Regions and will see 17 Aboriginal tourism businesses across the State receive advice and mentoring over the next three years. Member for Warren-Blackwood, Terry Redman, said Aboriginal tourism had been identified as an important sector in the tourism sector. “There are some magnificent Aboriginal tourism experiences in the Warren-Blackwood region that offer a one-of-a-kind tourism opportunity for visitors,” Mr Redman said. Each business chosen will work one-on-one with tourism business experts to fine-tune their products and operations, with business coaches taking a fresh look at all aspects of the business and implementing an action plan. “In this region, Poornarti Aboriginal Tours will take part in the ATDP. Poornarti offer hands on interactive experiences and activities that deepen understanding of traditional Noongar culture and history.” “The ATDP will help to harness the potential of Aboriginal tourism, allowing regional tourism businesses to grow and develop, while providing visitors with a unique, authentic, Aboriginal experience when they come to WA,” Mr Redman said. The ATDP will also include a major marketing push to promote extraordinary and unique Aboriginal tourism experiences to visitors. Mr Redman said the program would help participating businesses improve profits and create opportunities for employment and skills development. “Aboriginal tourism helps protect and preserve traditional culture whilst also motivating visitors to increase their length of stay across regional and remote WA,” Mr Redman said. “This Royalties for Regions investment will help create sustainable Aboriginal tourism businesses and contribute to a strengthened regional economy.” The ATDP is implemented by Tourism WA and the WA Indigenous Tourism Operators Council (WAITOC). Nationals Member for the South West Region, Colin Holt, has welcomed the State Government’s new communication campaign to inform and inspire both parents and potential students of the diverse and exciting opportunities offered by Western Australian TAFE courses.
Mr Holt said it was the first time in many years since the entire State Training sector collaborated on an individual campaign. Training and Workforce development Minister Liza Harvey said that TAFE has come a long way over the years. “TAFE now provides some of the most diverse and exciting career training opportunities and we want to ensure the community understands what is available,” she said. “I anticipate the campaign will encourage parents, students and those looking to re -skill to take another look at what our TAFE’s offer and I am certain many will be surprised at the high standard and diversity of career training which is offered in WA.” The “Make a Name” campaign uses former and current students as well as training lecturers to highlight courses offered in industries including aviation, engineering, agriculture, health, children’s services, tourism and fashion. Mr Holt said the campaign would be complimented by a new, easy to navigate website which allows potential students and parents to search career options which can be pursued through TAFE. The website, www.tafechoices.com, will outline the relevant courses and locations the training is offered. “This one-stop-shop style website will allow people to explore career opportunities offered through thousands of courses, in a range of industries across all our TAFE’s,” Mr Holt said.
