Every year an average of five people die in house fires and more than 1,200 fires start in the home. Lighters, matches and candles are a common cause of fires in the home.
These fires cause thousands of dollars damage and have contributed to the death and injury of a number of people – including children.

  • South-West region’s Community Chest Fund grant recipients announced
  • Community projects funded by $10 million investment over four years
  • Made possible by the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman today announced the successful grant recipients of the South-West region’s Community Chest Fund, made possible by the Liberal National Government’s Royalties for Regions program.

Mr Redman said the Community Chest Fund provided one-off grants to community, public and not-for-profit organisations to improve and develop infrastructure and services in the region.

“The Community Chest Fund provides voluntary organisations, educational institutions and community organisations with grants of up to $50,000 to support local projects,” he said.

“Included in this round of grants is $43,228 for Smiths Beach Surf Life Saving Club to purchase a transportable, off-grid solar power system to increase capacity for first aid and water safety training for volunteers; and $33,230 for Pathways SouthWest and the South West Community Alcohol and Drug Service to deliver a series of workshops to health professionals and the public, to help address substance use and addiction in the South-West.

“These projects will help attract investment, increase job opportunities and improve the quality of life for communities in the South-West region.

“The fund supports region-specific priorities that are driven by local communities to assist the development of infrastructure, services and community projects that help build vibrant regions with strong economies.

“Hundreds of diverse projects and organisations across regional WA have significantly benefited from the Community Chest Fund in recent years.”

The South West Development Commission has been allocated $555,555 from the Community Chest Fund, with applications considered on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted.

Funding for Schwenkes Dam.

Schwenkes Dam to receive Community Chest Funds

Member for Warren-Blackwood, Terry Redman today announced another grant recipient of the South West region’s Community Chest Fund, made possible by the Liberal National Government’s Royalties for Regions program.

The fund provides one-off grants of up to $50,000 to community, public and not-for-profit organisations to support local, demand-driven projects.

Mr Redman said the Blackwood Basin Group had been granted $50,000 to help fund Stage 1 of a Nature-Viewing Precinct Plan at Schwenkes Dam in Greenbushes.

“This grant will help to build a high quality boardwalk and trail to facilitate nature-based experiences that will benefit both tourists and the local community in Bridgetown-Greenbushes,” Mr Redman said.

“The improved facilities at Schwenkes Dam will build upon award-winning biodiversity conservation outcomes achieved at the site, and will provide disabled access to the boardwalk and a connecting trail to link with the established Greenbushes Loop trail network,” Mr Redman said.

The Community Chest Fund provides voluntary organisations, educational institutions and community organisations with grants of up to $50,000 to support local projects.

"The fund supports locally driven projects that will help improve services and infrastructure for the benefit of regional communities," he said.

"Hundreds of diverse projects and organisations across regional Western Australia have benefited from the fund in recent years."

WA's nine regional development commissions oversee the projects, each being allocated an equal share from which to provide the Community Chest Fund grants.

The Liberal National Government, through the Royalties for Regions program, has invested $10 million into the Community Chest Fund over the next four years.
