Meth Strategy Delivers 16 New SouthWest Rehab Beds.

7/11/2016

The Liberal National Government has announced funding for 16 new residential rehabilitation treatment beds in the South West as part of its $14.9 million WA Meth Strategy announced in May.

Mental Health Minister Andrea Mitchell said the contract for the 16 beds at Abbotsford Private Hospital in Nannup, was one of a number that would provide a total of 60 new treatments beds across the state, all of which will be available from January 2017.
Member for Warren-Blackwood, Terry Redman said the beds represented a significant boost in treatment and support for users and their families in the South West who wanted to address methamphetamine use.

“Recent statistics show that methamphetamine use and it's associated

harms is a significant problem in regional areas right around Australia,” Mr Redman said.

“These beds will add to the existing stock of treatment beds in the South West and ensure continuity of treatment options for people in South West communities who are experiencing meth-related harm.”

Minister Mitchell said the WA Meth Strategy 2016, had already delivered a boost to staffing in community alcohol and other drug counselling centres across the state, a dedicated Meth Helpline, a specialist meth outpatient clinic and frontline worker training.

“There is no one-size-fits-all treatment model for treating people with drug and alcohol problems,” Minister Mitchell said.

“The best outcomes are achieved when the type of treatment matches the specific needs of the individual and State Government is ensuring that the entire spectrum of treatment and prevention options is supported and available across the State.”

The service providers were selected through a competitive tender process that provides the best value and highest quality service for taxpayer dollars.

New Meth Helpline provides free 24/7 support.

Member for Warren-Blackwood, Terry Redman has welcomed a new dedicated Meth Helpline as part of the Liberal National Government’s Western Australian Meth Strategy.

Mr Redman said Helpline counsellors were available to provide information, referral to local services, discuss treatment options, provide a free call-back service, support health professionals and can support people waiting for treatment.

"I urge people with meth-related issues to call the Meth Helpline and talk with the professional counsellors about the treatment and support services available to them," Mr Redman said.

“I hear from constituents who want to know what to do or where to go. The Meth Helpline can provide that advice, information and support.”

Mr Redman said the new Meth Helpline provides free, confidential 24/7 support and can be reached on 1800 874 878 or visit http://drugaware.com.au.

"No matter what the circumstances, helpline counsellors will be there to listen and provide help and support."

Helpline counsellors are professional and non-judgemental and will work with people who are concerned about their own meth use or that of someone else.

Parents, families and friends are encouraged to get support through the helpline.

Helpline counsellors can also link parents and other family members to a network of trained parent volunteers who have experienced their own child's alcohol or drug use.

The Meth Helpline also provides support via email and the live chat online messaging service.

Calls to the Meth Helpline are free from a landline and most mobile phones, depending on the service provider
